Speck All Time Mercer County Rushing Leader

Only players who hold their school's record are listed above.

(9-28-16) Over the years of high school football in Mercer County many top players have had an impact on the local scene. The players who hold those records are know well for what they did during their time in high school.

St. Henry's Doug Speck left his mark on the all-time rushing leader in Mercer County. He holds the single game rushing record (381 yards vs Coldwater, 1993), second all-time for a season and was the all-time career leading rusher, just 10 yards short of having 5,000 for his career. Speck who was just 5-foot-7 and 165 pounds, didn't letthat stop him from being the 1993 Midwest Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year. Speckwas a winner, he was a part of two State Championship teams and three MAC football titles.

His totals may have been higher, but as a freshman he was on the same team that featured some of the greatest players to be a part of St. Henry football, Bobby Hoying, Kevin Niekamp, Greg Gels, Scott Brunswick and Jeff Hartings.

One of the most high profile runners on the all-time Mercer County rushing list is Celina's Jim Otis, the only back from the 1960's on the list. Otis during his career as a Bulldog never played in a play-off, due to Ohio not having them in the 1960's, yet he had a season of 1.690 yards. Otis went on to play at Ohio State and than on to the NFL, in 1975, he rushed for an NFC-leading 1,076 yards for the St. Louis Cardinals.

Career highlights of Jim Otis as shown at the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame 2015 Enshrinement Dinner.
