In 1993 Cinderella Wore Orange And Black
(7-27-16) - In 1993 the Coldwater Cavaliers were finishing up one of the worst seasons in boys basketball history. The Cavs would end the year on a 9 game losing streak and a 4-16 season record (2-7 in the MAC).
1992-1993 - MAC Standings
Team - MAC - Overall Ft. Recovery 8-0 19-4 New Knoxville 6-2 18-4 St. Henry 6-2 13-8 Marion Local 4-4 13-10 Delphos St.Johns 4-4 9-13 New Bremen 3-5 8-14 Minster 3-5 5-16 Coldwater 2-6 10-17 Parkway 0-8 2-19But you know what everyone says 'At tournament time everybody starts at 0-0'. The Cavs would put together a tournament run that would make that saying come true.
Coldwater would go on a 6 game tournament winning streak and make it to the Final 4 in Division III at Columbus with a 10-16 record, they would join another school with a losing record, 12-14, Cincinnati McNicholas, making the DIII state qualifiers quite an unique group. Unfortunatly neither team made it to the finals as Campbell Memorial beat Belpre in the title game.
The Cavs tournament run included a Double OT win over Wayne Trace 57-55 in the District Finals at Ohio Northern. It was Coldwater's second time to beat Wayne Trace, who they beat earlier in the regular season 73-67 and picked up their second win of the season and a .500 record at the time of 2-2.
Coldwater's appearance at the State Finals was the first in school history, plus during the run they picked up their first Regional title (they would do it again in 1999, when they would end up as State runner-ups).
Below is a recap in the 1993 Coldwater yearbook - 'Cavalier' about the 1993 season.

Mitch Lefeld remembers 1993I was injured to begin the season. As a matter of fact I was injured in the last scrimmage (an added scrimmage due to St. Mary's football postponing our first game because of football). I was beginning to run a little with that first team before the injury. I did not return until January and my return was slow playing very few minutes in the first few games. By the end of January I had cracked the starting lineup but we still couldn't find a win.
I am not sure why it took so long to come together but my thinking is that the team was also diverse age wise and not many of us had not played together before that year. That team had 4 seniors, 3 juniors, and 4 sophomores.
We played a lot of close games against a lot of good teams. In those last nine games we played LCC, St Mary's, and Ft Loramie who all made the state tournament that year. Not to mention Celina who was ranked in D1 and St Henry who was ranked in D4.
Funny story is we played all close except for the Loramie game. After that game we were just at a loss at what happened and we began joking in the lockeroom that we were going to state. The referee dressing room was right next to ours, they had to be laughing. Then 5 weeks later they were likely chuckling when we did make it! Haha
During the year I always believed we were better than our record, but being able to prove that to our community and the state was as much fun as an individual could have playing basketball over a 4 week span!
