Elida's Dave May - A Loss To Local High School Sports
9-21-16 - Yesterday afternoon the above tweet was posted by Elida Football, the result was an outpouring from those who knew him from around the Stateline area. It was only appropriate that it was happening on Twitter while area schools were competing in a variety of fall high school sports.
When you think of Elida athletics, you always thought of Dave May. He was a part of the administration from 1975 until he retired in June of 2010 (21 years as AD), a very dedicated service to Orange and Black Bulldogs for 35 years.
His heart was always in the Elida system, so he remained involved even after his first retirement. May served as the long-time Commissioner of the Northwest Central Conference starting in 2004. His value to that conference can be seen by all the membership changes that took place to keep the conference in place, not many could have done what he did.
Dave May told Jon Cook in a 2015 419sports.com story--
"Fran Voll, very successful high school girls basketball coach at Delphos St. Johns, and then Principal at Marion Catholic, called one day and said the NWCC was looking for a Commissioner of their new league and wanted to know if I would be interested. Fran told me they were looking for someone with Athletic A dministration experience and was familiar with the officiating world. I hadnít thought about a commissionerís position till Mr. Voll called and pointed out my experience in both athletic administration and officiating could possibly make for a good commissioner. I have now been involved with the NWCC for thirteen years."
ďI was passionate about it. I enjoyed working with the kids, the coaches and the ADís.Ē
"Changes are only necessary if it improves the league. It is exciting to be part of the WBL again. It is a top notch league because of the administrators and Mr. Askins."
Thanks Dave May for your contribution to High School sports, you've touch the lives of many young people, administrators and coaches for many years, you made things better during that time.
You Will Always Be Remembered and Never Forgotten
