BOYS BASKETBALL- SSN National Boys HS Basketball Player of the Week
Bishop Montgomery's (California) Ethan Thompson - SSN National Player of the Week - 3-5-17
Thompson was the key in the Knights' fourth quarter comeback in knocking off Mater Dei 70-55 in the CIF Southern Section Open Division Championship game. Thompson led Bishop Montgomery with 23 points, eight rebounds and five assists. The game had national attention as both teams were ranked nationally in the Top 10. The division also featured two other schools ranked as well in the US in the Top 10, Chino Hills and Sierra Canyon. Many rated it as one of the top state tournament bracket in the country
Palmer's (Alaska) Clayton Southwick - SSN National Player of the Week - 2-26-17
Southwick had three 3-poiners and scored a game-high 31 points (12 rebounds and 4 blocked shots), 10 in the fourth quarter, in the Moose 61-54 win over previously undefeated Kodiak on Friday night. In the Saturday night game Kodiak picked up the 60-47, Southwick had 11 points.
In a Frontiersman story Southwick, a Junior, just found out he has already scored a 1,000 points in his career and also has over 500 rebounds and 200 assists. After the past weekend he now has 1,170 points in his career.
Palmer Head Coach Chuck Martin told thr Frontiersman:“I’ve been privileged to coach a lot of good basketball players, but Clayton is probably the most gifted of them all because of his size and what he can do with his size. He wants to be really good. I love him because he’s so competitive.”
Kahuku's (Hawaii) Samuta Avea - SSN National Player of the Week - 2-19-17Kahuku Red Raider #32 Samuta Avea 2-16-17
Avea led the Red Raiders to the school's first ever Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division I State Title beating Punahou 70-55. The 6'6 Senior had 20 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots in the tile game and was named the tournament's MVP. In the quarter-final game win over Kalaheo he had 15 points and 7 rebounds and in the OT semi-final win over 'Iolani he had 12 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocked shots.
After the championship game Avea told Hawaii News Now:
"I love my team. I'm speechless right now. This is crazy how good our team played and how good we mesh together, and it's all thanks to Coach Brandyn."
Avea will attend the University of Hawaii next year. His four-year high school career has been quite an adventure, he played two seasons (Freshman and Sophomore) at Kahuku before moving to Utah for his junior season to hopefully get added exposure. While living with his Aunt he helped Bingham (Utah) to a Utah 5A Championship. Signing with Hawaii before his Senior season he decided to move back home and play his final year back home at Kahuku.
Marion's (Indiana) Tim Leavell - SSN National Player of the Week - 2-12-17
Leavell led the Giants to a 111-103 double-overtime win over Mississinawa. Leavell broke the Marion single-game scoring record, passing James Blackmon Jr, with 55 points. He had 10-2’s, 8-3’s and 11 free throws.
Kentwood's (Washington) D’Angelo Minnis - SSN National Player of the Week -2-5-17
Kentwood's D’Angelo Minnis, a 5-foot-9 junior guard, scored 14 points off the bench (Saturday), including two key 3-pointers late in the game as Kentwood ended Federal Way's 63 consecutive game winning streak 69-59.
Minnis told the Tacoma News Tribune after the game:
“I’m just blessed. I’ve been working. We’re just trying to get to state and win a championship.”
North Central's (Mich) Dawson Bilski - SSN National Player of the Week - 1-29-17
Bilski had a week to remember, on Friday night in a 76-29 win over Bark River Harris he scored his 1,000th career point, 21 points on the night. On Tuesday night he had 19 points in a 76-24 win over Mid Peninsula.
After the game Bilski, who has signed to play at Michigan Tech, told the Iron Mountain Daily News:
“It’s awesome. I tried to treat this game like every other game I play. It was great getting the streak (record) tonight, and the 1,000 points is for me but also for my teammates. When you play together, great things happen.”
What made the Friday night win even more special for Bilski is the fact that the Jets set a new MHSAA record with its 66th consecutive win and have not lost since the 2014 Class D state quarterfinal game against Cedarville (12-8-2014-present). The previous record was held by Chassell, almost sixty years ago (Feb. 1956 to Nov. 1958).
The Jets are 11-0 on the season and are hoping to win their third consecutive MHSAA Class D State Championship this season.

Ft. Wayne (Ind) North Side's Keion Brooks Jr. - SSN National Player of the Week - 1-22-17
In a Friday night conference win the Legends came back from a double-digit fourth quarter deficit to beat Homestead 62-60. Brooks led the way for North Side scoring 29 points. The Legends are now 16-1 on the season.
Upper Arlington's (Ohio) Dane Goodwin - SSN National Player of the Week - 1-15-17
This weekend at the Flyin' In The Hoops in Dayton, Ohio, Goodwin led the Golden Bears to a 62-34 win over Garfield Heights.
Goodwin had as many points (34) as the Bulldogs:
FG: 11-19 3pt: 4-9 FT: 8-11 Rebs: 13 Assts: 2On Friday night Goodwin had 19 points in a 58-22 win over Marysviile, Tuesday night in a 67-53 win over Westerville North he had 32 points.
Birmingham's (Lake Balboa, Calif) Deschon Winston - SSN National Player of the Week - 1-8-17
Birmingham Head Coach Nick Halic told the LA Times after the game:
"The best about his game was he didn't force it. Everything was in the flow of what we do. He was amazing."
Winston had help from some teammates, two brothers, Devonaire Doutrive had 30 points and Devante Doutrive had 20 points and 10 assists in the 110 point output.
Winston recently picked up a D1 offer from Arizona State.

Danville's (Ill) Kendle Moore - SSN National Player of the Week - 12-31-16
(12-31-16) This week's SSN National Boys Basketball Player of the Week is Danville (Ill) 6'0 Junior Kendle Moore.
This week at the Pontiac (Illinois) Holiday Tournament in an upset win (71-55) win over nationally ranked Chicago Curie, Moore had a career game with 36 points (12-21 FG, 5-9 3pt FG, 7-8 FT) , 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals.
The Vikings went 2-2 in the very competetive tournament. In the third place game, a loss to Bloom Twp (71-62), Moore had 25 points (FG 9-19, 3pt 3-8, FT 4-5), 5 assists and 2 steals.
In the opening round game win against West Aurora he had 18 points, in a sem-final loss to Benet Academy he was held to 12 points.
Danville coach Ted Houpt told the Commercial-News after the win over Curie.
“Kendle has always been a really good kid. This year, he has just taken his game to another level. You could see that in this game. He was going to find a way to get the job done.

Platteview's (Neb) Brady Heiman - SSN National Player of the Week - 12-25-16
(12-23-16)Platteview's (Neb) Brady Heiman, a 6-foot-10 Junior center scored 21 points, plus he had 17 rebounds, seven blocked shots and three assists to help the the Trojans to a 64-48 win at Omaha Roncalli (12-20-16). It was Heiman's third double-double in four games.
Platteview coach Tim Brotzki told Nebraska PrepzoneNebraska Prepzone“Brady’s a special talent. When he’s locked in and dialed in, Brady’s very, very tough.”

Muscatine's (Iowa) Joe Wieskamp - SSN National Player of the Week - 12-18-16(12-18-16) Mucatine's (Iowa) 6-foot-4 Junior Joe Wieskamp led the Muskie's to an 84-44 win over Burlington (12-13-16) and in the process broke two school records, 50 points in a single game and he also became the new all-time career points leader with 1,068. Wieskamp on the night was 16-21 FGs (9-12 3's), 8 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists. The 50 points is his career high, his previous high was 35 points.
On Friday night (12-16-16) Wieskamp was held to a season low 21 points (6 of 14 from the field) in a 52-46 loss to Davenport North.
Davenport North Head Coach Joe Ewen told qctimes.com“I don’t think any kind of defense really works well against him. I mean, he still had 21. He’s just a tremendous player."
Sidney's (Ohio) Andre Gordon - SSN National Player of the Week - 12-11-16
Sidney Ohio's 6'1 Sophomore Guard Andre Gordon is this week's SSN National Player of the Week.
In the first game of the season the Yellow Jackets beat Bellefontaine 70-58, Gordon had six three-pointers on his way to a 30 point night, he added 9 rebounds, 9 assists and 3 steals.
Sidney went 2-1 on the week, Gordon added 31 points on Friday in a win over Tippecanoe and added 14 more points on Saturday night in a loss to Wapakoneta.
Chino Hills' (Calif) LiAngelo Ball - SSN National Player of the Week - 12-4-16
12-4-16 - Chino Hills 6'5 Senior LiAngelo Ball had a HUGE week no doubt about it.
Ball's highlight game was Wednesday when he scored 72 points in a 128-108 win over Rancho Christian (Temecula) , that followed a 56 point night on Tuesday in a 32-point win over Orange Lutheran.
Ball and company would than go on to win the 4th annual BattleZone Tournament championship on Saturday beating Long Beach Poly, 78-75 on Ball’s 3-pointer with 7 seconds remaining that broke a 75-all tie, scoring a game high 25 points, plus eight rebounds, four assists and two steals.
The night before Chino Hills beat #14 nationally ranked Foothills Christian 90-73 to advance to the final, Ball had 28 points in the win.
Up next for the MaxPreps #1 nationally rated team is a trip to Las Vegas to play Bishop Gorman.

Holy Innocents’ Episcopal Jules Erving - SSN National Player of the Week - 11-28-16
6'6 Senior forward Jules Erving out of Holy Innocents’ Episcopal (Atlanta) scored 14 points and had seven rebounds on Saturday in a 71-67 win over Jenkins (Savannah, Ga.) at the Holiday Hoopsgiving Tournament. On Friday in a 76-58 point loss to Carmel Christian he had 10 points. Erving is averaging 15 points and nine rebounds a game.
Despite being a Senior and the son of former NBA star Julius “Dr. J” Erving, Jules has just recently started to pursue his basketball career at HIE, according to USA Today he is starting to get looks from several D1 schools. As the season moves on he should continue to develop his skills and that will also help the Golden Bears.

Last second shot by Jill Froning for unranked Celina wins the game over Ohio's #1 rated Pickerington (were also rated in USA Today Top 5)...Celina went on to win the Ohio D1 State Championsip game.
